Carson pulls upset on road over Taft

The Carson football team took a look at a San Fernando Valley-area newspaper on Friday and took note of a panel of reporters each picking Taft to defeat the Colts.

Carson put the prediction in the garbage can, riding the accurate arm of quarterback Dominique Blackman and a defense that produced a pair of turnovers that led to touchdowns in a 31-21 nonleague victory at Taft.
Blackman completed 14 of 20 passes for 188 yards and touchdown passes of 14, 8 and 9 yards to lead Carson back from a 14-3 first-quarter deficit.

The victory gave Carson (2-0) a win on the road against always dangerous Taft (0-2). Though Taft is winless, it still boasts a stable of speedy skill players that most teams in the South Bay would love to have. Carson got two key turnovers and ran the ball effectively, with Jack Sula rushing 20 times for 144 yards and one touchdown.

Sula caused quarterback Exavier Johnson to fumble on Taft's first possession of the second quarter. Steven Boyd returned the ball 25 yards to the 50-yard line. Blackman later connected with Sula on a 14-yard touchdown to give Carson an 18-14 lead at halftime.

Carson's Antonio Crews intercepted Johnson at Taft's 40-yard line midway through the third quarter. Four plays later, Blackman connected with Morrell Presley on an 8-yard touchdown to give Carson a 25-14 lead. Blackman also threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ken McRoyal that gave the Colts a 31-14 lead with 2:22 left in the third quarter.

Blackman completed all eight of his pass attempts for 79 yards in the second half. Though Carson was undisciplined at times (10 penalties for 80 yards), the Colts survived with timely defense. They put Johnson under constant pressure, and while Carson forced two turnovers, it committed none offensively.

"I don't think a lot of people outside of this team gave us much of a chance to win this game," Blackman said. "But we want to continue to prove people wrong."
Blackman spread the ball to eight different receivers. Mike Cortez added 52 yards on eight carries. Carson avenged a lopsided loss to Taft last year. A road win at Taft can't hurt Carson's reputation this season as a rising team.

"Everyone doubted us because of our record last year," Sula said. "We had a bad season and people think that we're still a bad team, but not anymore."
