Colts falter near finish line against WolverinesRyan Calvert caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from John Howe with 3:33 remaining for what would be the winning score for the visiting Wolverines (2-2). Elias De Wit preserved the victory with an interception at the 5-yard line with two seconds left on a desperation pass by Dominique Blackman. Carson (2-2) drove from its own 31 to the Harvard-Westlake 15-yard line with 58 seconds left, but a holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 30. Blackman threw three consecutive incomplete passes before the game-ending interception. It was the second consecutive loss to a Southern Section opponent for first-year Carson coach Mike Christensen, who previously coached at Lakewood. The Colts lost to nationally-ranked Dominguez, 32-26, last week. Calvert's winning touchdown was the only lead for Harvard-Westlake, which trailed 18-3 in the second quarter and 30-19 with 10 minutes to play. The Wolverines climbed to within 30-25 on a 14-yard pass from Howe to Clark Porter with 8:47 to play. An interception return by Terry O'Neal to the Carson 20 set up the winning score. Carson jumped to an 18-3 second-quarter lead, buoyed by Stephen Boyd, who rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and a 33-yard touchdown reception by Marquis Williams. Carson extended an 18-9 halftime lead to 24-9 on a 44-yard interception return by Jack Sula less than two minutes into the second quarter and stretched it to 30-19 with 10:48 left on a 1-yard run by Blackman. Blackman completed 11 of 22 passes for 145 yards, including four to Morrell Presley for 55 yards. |
