Carson's offense was a little sluggish from the outset and never did get going as the host Colts stumbled to start their season with a 14-0 loss to Grandview of Colorado on Friday night at Carson.

Grandview began the game with a squib kick that caught Carson off-guard and resulted in the ball being muffed and recovered by Grandview.

Grandview quickly moved the ball to the Carson 9-yard line before defensive back Chris Hill intercepted a pass.

The momentum was short-lived, however, as Carson turned the ball over two plays later on the first of three first-half interceptions by quarterback Daniel Torres.

Starting quarterback Dominique Blackman, who has committed to the University of Washington, remains suspended indefinitely for what Coach Mike Christensen has called violations of team rules.

After a scoreless first quarter, the first play of the second quarter resulted in a touchdown after Torres threw a backward lateral that was picked up by Shawn Tucker of Grandview and returned 52 yards for the game's first score.

Torres, who was making his first varsity start in place of Blackman, looked a little shaky after being sacked four times and having five of his passes dropped, two of which would have resulted in touchdowns. Torres completed just six of 18 passes for a total of 49 yards.

The Colts lost starting running back Jack Sula for the game when he suffered a mild concussion in the second quarter. Sula back wanted to return and even tried to sneak on the field in the second half, but was quickly noticed and was pulled off the field by the medical staff.

"It hurts to lose the first game," Sula said. "I wanted to play, but the staff wouldn't let me back in. They said I had a concussion."

The Colts were led by running back Kevin Lane, who had 62 yards on 14 carries.

Torres was second in rushing with 34 yards and seemed to do his best when he rolled out of the pocket and used his speed to outrun the Grandview defense.

"I'm a little disappointed, we didn't play particularly well," Christensen said. "Fortunately for us it's just the first game of a long high school season."
