pound the ball behind Sula (221 yards) all night to overpower Bishop
Amat, 21-13, in the final tune-up for Marine League play.By Craig Currier, Daily Breeze Correspondent Jack Sula carried the ball 30 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns, leading Carson to an inspired 21-13 win over Bishop Amat on Friday night in La Puente. The victory came a week after a disappointing 31-30 loss to Harvard-Westlake at Home Depot Center. Sula said he came ready to play as Carson (3-2) focused on running the ball all week in practice. "I expected that this week," Sula said. "The offensive line was really upset about the upset last week. We came out and pounded the ball tonight." Carson's offense did just that, especially in the first half. Sula ran for 154 yards and both of his scores before halftime as Carson possessed the ball for over 16 minutes in the half and held a 14-7 lead at the break. "That was our plan the whole week," quarterback Dominique Blackman said. "We just wanted to get the ball to our running back." "That's what we do," Coach Mike Christensen said. "We build behind our offensive line and our fullback." It took Carson just two plays to score on its opening drive of the second half. Blackman hit varsity newcomer Chris Cockrell on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 9:47 to play in the third quarter, extending the lead to 21-7. "He practiced well this week," Blackman said of Cockrell. "We brought him up here this week and he executed." Carson's defense struggled with Bishop Amat's star wide receiver Dorian Wells (eight catches, 100 yards), but held the Lancers (2-3) to 71 yards rushing and intercepted two Xavier Carrillo passes in the second half. "We knew Wells was a great player coming in," Christensen said. "That speaks volumes about the kid. We knew who he was and he still had his game." Carson's defense made two big plays in the second half to seal the win. With Carson leading, 21-7, Roddrick Hall made the first interception in Carson's end zone on third-and-goal with 5:35 left in the third quarter, keeping Bishop Amat from cutting into the lead. The 5-foot-4 Hall made an impressive play as he out-jumped the 5-foot-10 Wells on a fade route into the end zone. The Lancers did not go away, however. On its very next drive, Bishop Amat went 54 yards on 13 plays for a touchdown. The Lancers tried a fake on the extra point, but the pass failed and it was 21-13 with 8:32 left. Bishop Amat had one final chance from its own 20 with 1:21 to play, but Carrillo was intercepted by David Sausau, allowing Carson to run out the clock. Carrillo was 12-for-23 as he threw for 200 yards, including an 83-yard strike to Michael Linares that briefly tied the game, 7-7, with 8:42 to play in the second quarter.
