Carson High's football game against Long Beach Poly on Sept. 21 at Veterans Stadium will no longer be televised by Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket because the Poly administration has turned down the opportunity out of fear of lost revenue.
CIF Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said he was informed of the administration's decision by Poly co-principal Victor Charles on Wednesday afternoon. It's a Poly home game.
"We made the decision based on the fact that we lose money when our (home) games have been shown on Fox Sports," co-principal Shawn Ashley said Wednesday evening.
"With two local teams in Poly and Carson being on (televised), a number of fans may say, 'We'll just stay home and watch the game on TV.' What we would get (in compensation from the network for the telecast) in no way measures up to what we lose in revenue, and our expenses."
The Southern Section and the Fox Sports Network and Southern Section have a five-year contract to telecast 10 regular-season football games, as well as select playoff games.
Schools whose teams participate in the broadcasts receive a portion of the money paid by the network to the Southern Section.
"It can end up being anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand (dollars)," Simmons said.
Should Poly be the host for a playoff game that the network wanted to broadcast, "Then it becomes our decision (to OK the broadcast instead of the host school), since we pay all expenses (including stadium rental) for playoff games," Simmons added.
FSN spokesperson Jennifer Johnson said, "If they (Poly's administration) feels it (broadcasting the Sept. 21 game) is not in the best interests for them, then we absolutely respect that decision."
Edison (last season) and Oaks Christian (this season) are other schools whose administrations declined opportunities to play host to FSN telecasts.
"We have four other matchups that we're considering right now (for the Sept. 21 date)," Johnson said.
